Books, Gifts, Lap Cats, and More!

Horton's Books & Gifts offers vintage charm for modern lifestyles - a place to browse for books to read, and find wonderful gifts, away from the hectic pace of the world.

Founded in 1891 by Nathan Allen Horton, Horton's Books & Gifts has been a part of the Carrollton community for over 130 years. Originally a source for school textbooks, the store later expanded to include furniture, sewing machines, china, and even caskets. In addition to being a bookseller, Mr. Horton was also one of the areas local undertakers. He believed in offering the community a full-service store, a tradition that continues today (minus caskets!) by offering customers the best choice of books and gifts.

Operated by his son Hap after 1917, Horton's continued to grow along with Carrollton. After temporarily relocating to various buildings around the downtown square, Horton's returned to its original location in 1955, and has remained at 410 Adamson Square ever since as a refuge for bibliophiles.

Antique pharmacy cases filled with books, antiques, and crafts line the walls, framing the original golden heart pine floors. Our hidden lower level provides a cozy escape and offers a selection of used fiction and non-fiction books. The sale of these goes to the Chloe Fund to help local charities including the Carroll County Animal Shelter. And, if you need a little help finding the perfect book or gift, our store cats are always available to lend a helping paw.
